When will the schedule and brochure be available? The brochure is usually available in early March.  Application packets are available to download in mid-March.  Please e-mail the office if you would like an application packet mailed to you.

What’s the big deal about ACA accreditation?
Makemie Woods and the Camp Jordan program voluntarily adhere to over 400 standards for health, safety and risk management to ensure the best possible program we can provide.  Not all camps choose to become accredited by the American Camp Association, or pass the accreditation process.  Visit the ACA website for more information.

Is Camp Jordan the only special needs camp you offer?
Camp Jordan is the only specific special needs camp that is offered.  Our staff are trained to work with children with ADHD and other minor disorders.  Camp Jordan is not equipped to handle campers with extreme emotional or psychological problems.

What will my child do?  Is there more than just diabetes education?
Your child will take part in all types of traditional camp activities, such as swimming, canoeing, crafts, games, and more!  Campers will spend time with dieticians and others to learn how to manage their diabetes with regard to exercise and healthy eating habits.

Are the staff trained in recognizing the symptoms of high and low glucose levels?
Yes.  Our staff take part in specialized training before your camper arrives to not only recognize the symptoms of high and low glucose levels, but also how to correct these symptoms using diet and exercise.  Our counselors work very closely with the medical staff to ensure your child's safety.

What about my child’s eating habits?  Will they eat at a regular time each day?
While at Camp Jordan, your child will be served 3 meals a day, as well as 3 scheduled snacks, if needed.  Your child's counselor will also carry a back pack to carry snacks and other items if your child needs to correct his glucose level.

My child is a picky eater.  Is he allowed to eat anything he wants?
Our dietetic interns work very hard to plan healthy meals that are appealing to our campers.  There is a variety of cereal available at breakfast time, as well as a salad bar and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches available at lunch and dinner if your child does not like the items on the main menu.

Can my child bring food or candy?  What if my child's glucose level is low?
No.  We do not allow campers to bring food or candy to camp.  We would not want to invite the critters of the forest into our living space.  Your child's counselor will have a back pack to carry snacks and other items if your child needs to correct his or her glucose level.

Do I need to bring supplies, such as insulin, glucose monitor, etc.?
In order to makes things more effecient at Camp Jordan, each camper is given a glucose monitor when they arrive at camp.  Your camper will also be provided with test strips, insulin, sites, syringes and other medical supplies as needed.

Are there medical personnel at camp 24/7?
Yes.  Physicians and nurses will provide medical supervision throughout your child's stay. Many of the medical, nursing, and nutritional personnel are volunteers from supporting hospitals and private practices. Counselors, certified lifeguards for water activities, and program directors directly supervise the campers in all activities.

Does my child have to get up on his/her own at night for checks?
No. Your child's counselor or assigned support staff member will help wake your child up for 2am glucuse checks.  Every camper will take part in 2am checks for the first few nights.  After that, the doctors will decide who does and does not need to check for lows in the middle of the night.

My child does not give himself his own injections?  Will he get help?
Yes.  Your child will not only receive help, but will learn how to do it himself.  Camp Jordan is a perfect opportunity to foster confidence, independence, and self-reliance.  One of the goals of Camp Jordan is to enable campers to give themselves their own injections.  However, no one will be forced to do anything that they are uncomfortable with.

My child is on a pump and can’t change his site.  Do the doctors help with that?
Yes, your child will meet with the medical staff on a regular basis to change their pump site.

Do you have family visitation time?
No.  One of our goals is to foster independence and community in your child's group.  A visit from a family member may disrupt the community building process.  Seeing a family member may actually cause a child to become homesick and not focus on the camp experience.  It is very important to discern if you and your camper are ready for this experience.

What happens if my child gets homesick?
With loving care, the counselor will do everything possible to determine the cause of the homesickness, and to address the issues identified.  Your camper will be told that if he/she still feels this way in 24 hours, one of the directors will call you, the parents or guardian.  Every attempt will be made to encourage the camper to have a good time and to feel needed and important.  If a call is needed, you and the director will discuss options before you speak with the child.  If you determine the best option is to pick up your child, we will help you in that process by having the camper ready.  There are no refunds for campers who leave due to homesickness.
