Can we bring our own food and prepare our own meals?
If the group is less than 50, in most circumstances, yes. Jordan Lodge has a small kitchen with residential refrigerator, stove and microwave. Laurel Hall has a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave and sink. By State regulation, we cannot allow groups to use the main commercial kitchen in the dining hall.
Groups preparing their own meals must provide ALL cooking supplies in addition to the food. This includes:
Why Food Service may better meet your needs:
Many groups think that bringing food and preparing meals will save money, and to a certain extent that is true. However in almost every circumstance the meal preparation, rearranging the rooms for meals, etc, can be very time consuming and even disruptive to the flow of the event. In our world today, time is a most precious commodity, especially time dedicated to a specific experience away from the interruptions and distractions of everyday life. The group leader may need to decide which is more valuable--a few dollars saved by the group bringing food, or more time spent in fellowship, meditation, education, team building, or other ways you may achieve your group's goals.
Another option: Some groups choose to bring one meal, and have Makemie Woods provide the other meals. This option works especially well with groups that would prefer to sleep in rather than have breakfast. From the leader's perspective, having an 8:00 AM breakfast time can help the group get moving and motivated for the rest of the day in a timely fashion.
The goal of the Makemie Woods staff is to help your group have the best possible retreat. To help us do that, please make sure that accurate headcounts are provided at least a week in advance, and that groups arrive to meals promptly at the designated time.
