general information about the

roots and wings campaign

An update:  With the dramatic change in the economy, the Roots and Wings task force is exploring a variety of options towards achieving the goals listed below.  When the economy improves, the task force hopes to move forward with raising additional funds needed to begin construction.  Funds in hand are secured in a CD, earning interest.

The campaign thus far has raised $1.2 million with nearly 400 donors.  With the increased cost of construction, the Presbytery in January 2008 voted to pursue a small conference lodge as a next step towards the overall vision summarized below.

Summary:  The goal of the campaign is to expand the ministry at Makemie Woods so that the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia can better equip the saints of our churches and beyond.  This vision includes
  • an accessible conference center with private, motel-like accommodations to make the facility more welcoming for adults,
  • an activity center with gymnasium, stage, and shower facilities to help expand programs for children and youth
  • a welcome center to provide secure central location for greeting guests, and improved administrative space
  • a maintenance building to provide adequate support to the entire camp facility (Completed 2002!)
  • a tithe  to help the Stone House Presbyterian Church, our newest congregation, construct their first building (fulfilled in  2007 with the help of additional resources).
