For over 45 years,
Makemie
Woods
has
been
changing
lives
by
providing
a
high-quality,
FUN!
and safe Christian summer camp
for
children and youth. Established in 1964, Makemie Woods offers a
chance for
campers to try new things, learn new skills, make new friends,
enjoy and appreciate nature, and
most importantly develop and nurture their faith in Jesus Christ.
Every camper at Makemie Woods participates in Bible study led by a
minister or church leader and daily devotions led
by our college-aged or older staff.
In addition to growing in
their faith, campers at Makemie Woods:
go canoeing or rowboating
practice new skills at our
archery range*
create awesome crafts like hemp,
picture frames, and fuse beads
meet our pet snakes and giant
tortoise (and in 2010, a bunny named Oreo)
play exciting night games
participate in campfires; and
more!
(*for safety reasons, archery is not
available for Beginners, Young Explorers, or the FISH session.
Zip lines are available to traditional camps intended for grades 6 and
older--Nomads, Night Owls and Alternate Sports)
See highlights from
Summer 2009 in the video below:
Our
staff is
made up of approximately 30 dedicated, Christ-loving, fun individuals,
recruited from the US and from all over the world. Counselors are
at least 18 years old and finished at least one year of college.
Every staff member is certified in first aid and CPR at a
minimum. Many staff members have more extensive certification
such as lifeguarding, canoe instruction, water safety instruction,
wilderness first aid, etc. We have an EMT and several First Aid
instructors on our staff.
Each staff member submits an application, participates in an
extensive interview, and undergoes a criminal background history
check. References are required, and checked. Nothing is
more important to us than your camper's safety!
